Landfill in the year 2010We set the garbage out. Someone picks it up, and it's gone. It may be out of sight and out of mind, but it doesn't disappear. It goes to the landfill, and landfill space is limited.
It doesn't look trashy, does it? This landfill was closed and sealed in 1998. Now, in the year 2010, we dug through the top layers to see if everything has decomposed. Let's climb up the hill of trash to see what the crusher is doing.
Now, how about a close-up...
Look! There's a newspaper from 1997 and a Hanson CD. They're 13 years old! The plastic CD case should last forever, but a newspaper? Paper is biodegradable. So why didn't it decompose, or turn back into pulp? |
